The Mongolian Clock (Slydini)......$2.50
The magician removes a deck of cards from its case and takes
from it the Ace, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine,
and Ten of Hearts and the Aces of Spades and Clubs, and the
Two of Clubs.
These cards are placed in a circle (see picture below) with the
Ace of Spades being the center card. The magician then asks
the spectator, "What does this remind you of? A clock? Very
good. Did you ever hear of the Mongolians? No? Well, I don't
know if you know anything about the history of the Mongolians,
but for centuries they never saw a clock or carried a watch.
Whenever they wanted to tell the time , they would take a little
pack of cards out, arrange them like this....and believe it or not,
they could tell the exact time of day. You don't believe me?
Well, I don't care. I will prove it to you, and when I am done don't
give me any credit....Give it to the Mongolians!" (This will get a
big laugh.)
The magician then asks the spectator to think of any of the
twelve cards. When this is done the magician picks up all the
cards in the circle and places them on the bottom of the deck.
The cards are then handed to the spectator and without the
performer watching they are told to take the same number of
cards from the top of the deck (whatever number they thought of)
and place them on the bottom. (In other words, if they thought of
two, then take two cards from the top of the deck and place
them on the bottom.) When this is done the deck is handed
back to the magician who immediately starts tossing the cards
face down onto the table one at a time from the bottom of the
deck until all fifty-two cards are face down. It now seems
impossible for anyone to locate the card, even the magician. To
further amaze the spectators, the performer starts to vigorously
intermix the cards using both hands on the surface of the table
and then very dramatically produces the card!
This was one of Slydini's staple card effects and to see him
perform it (I was lucky enough to witness a performance) was
something you will always remember for many years. You are
supplied with the secret two pages of instructions which include
drawings so you to will be able to perform this wonderful and
entertaining effect. Supply your own cards as any pack can be
used.
