The performer talks about an experience that he once had at a
carnival while playing an unusual Carny game that was called Odd
Ball. The operator introduces six cards, consisting of five double
blank cards, and one card with a black spot on its face but having a
blank back like the others. The object of the game was to try and
keep your eyes on the spot card and locate it among the other
non-spotted cards. If you found the Odd Card on the first pick you
won, and if not, you lost. The operator placed the black spot card
with the other blank cards and shuffled them up, then laid them out
with the black spot face down so no one knew the location of the
spot card.
Well it turned out that this operator was not on the up-and-up and
tried to play a fast one on me, but being a magician I was able to
catch on to the ruse, and was able to follow his shenanigans and
locate the odd card on the first try. He wasn't too happy about
having to give me a prize that was worth much more than the one
dollar that I paid him to play the game.
Just as I was about to leave the booth, he asked if I would like to
play the game again for free? The stipulation being that if I lost I
would have to return the prize I had just won, but if I won, I could
select any three prizes! Well this sounded a little fishy and I knew
that the Carny had something up his sleeve to prevent me from
having any chance of winning, but my curiosity got the best of me, so
I agreed to the offer.
The Carny started out just as before, by mixing up the six cards, and
placing them face down on his working surface . Once again, I was
asked to pick out the odd card, which was the card with the black
spot on its face. Well I was able to follow the spot card once again
and was just about ready to pick it up when one of the Carny's
accomplishes (who was in on the scam) distracted me for a
moment. While I looked away for that split second, the Carny
switched the card I was going for with one of the
blank-on-both-sides cards. When I returned my gaze back to the six
cards on the table I reached over and picked up the card that I was
going to turn up before the distraction. Of course when I turned the
card over it did not have the spot on it. The Carney said "you loose!
You missed the Odd Card!" Realizing that I had been scammed, I
decided to teach these guys a lesson.
I said to the Carny, "I thought that the name of this game was called
"Odd Ball" and that if you find the odd card you win!" "That's right!",
said the Carny. So I said, "Well then, I won and I'll pick my three
prizes!" The Carny looked perplexed and said that I didn't pick the
odd card! But I proved him wrong with a bit of my magic, because
when the other five cards were shown, they all had black spots on
them, and the card that I picked did not, so I did indeed pick the Odd
Card! Well the Carny had meet his match, and had nothing else to
do but let me pick out my three prizes!
