The magician patters about Karate and the powers of concentration
and offers to give a demonstration. A small board with a hole
through its center and a drinking glass are shown, along with a few
paper straws and some playing cards. The drinking glass is placed
on the table and the board is placed on the mouth glass and then
one of the playing cards is placed on the board. The magician asks
a spectator to hold the glass at its base to help steady it during the
demonstration. The performer picks up one of the straws and jabs it
down onto the card resting on the board, but the straw crumbles up.
The performer says he wasn't concentrating enough and will try once
again. A second straw is picked up, and after a few moments of
concentration, the magician jabs the card once again, and this time
the paper straw penetrates the playing card and is seen to be
sticking through the other side of the card! The performer lifts the
card off the board and slides it back and forth over the straw to
further prove it has actually impaled the card. After the
demonstration, everything can be passed for examination, and there
is nothing to be found to even give a clue as to how the feat was
accomplished. Anyone else attempting to duplicate the feat will fail.
